BOTOX Therapeutics

We are pleased to offer BOTOX® Therapeutics as a service at Greenwood Park Dentistry.

BOTOX® is a popular treatment option for jaw tension and TMJ disorder. These conditions can cause pain and discomfort in the jaw and facial muscles, as well as headaches and difficulty chewing. BOTOX® works by relaxing the muscles in the jaw and face, which can help alleviate tension and reduce pain. Our team of experienced dental professionals is trained in the use of BOTOX® for therapeutic purposes and can help alleviate pain and discomfort caused by clenching and grinding, TMD, tension headaches, and diagnosed chronic migraines.

Jaw tension and TMJ disorder are often caused by overactive muscles in the jaw and face. These muscles may be constantly clenched or tensed, leading to pain and discomfort. BOTOX® works by temporarily paralyzing these muscles, which can help reduce tension and alleviate pain. By addressing the underlying muscle tension, BOTOX® can help prevent further damage to the teeth and provide relief from pain and discomfort.

At our clinic, we take a comprehensive approach to dental care, which includes addressing not just the teeth and gums, but also the muscles and joints of the face and jaw. By incorporating BOTOX® Therapeutics into our treatment options, we can provide a more complete and holistic approach to dental care, helping to improve overall oral health and quality of life.

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort related to clenching and grinding, TMD, tension headaches, or chronic migraines, BOTOX® therapeutics may be a viable treatment option for you. Contact us today at Greenwood Park Dentistry to schedule a consultation and learn more about how BOTOX® Therapeutics can help improve your oral health and overall quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do therapeutic Botox® treatments hurt?

This is the number one question we get from clients considering therapeutic Botox® treatments and we can say with absolute certainty that is does not hurt!

We utilize the Weal Injection Technique, which is an advanced technique developed by Dr. Warren Roberts , a Canadian dental Surgeon practicing in Vancouver and a world leader in the field of Botox® therapeutics and aesthetics. Patients report back that they often didn’t even realize we had started.

Plus, our highly trained staff members utilize EMG ( electro myology), whereby they place soft cushion type electrodes in the muscles of your face, neck, and shoulder, allowing them to pick up on any irregular and painful muscle activity and pinpoint the source of pain. This allows our team to achieve improved precision points of medication. We utilize the same technology in your follow ups to determine pain and muscle activity prior to additional Botox® therapy.

Q: What is the advantage of the Weal Injection Technique?

Unlike traditional Botox® treatments, with this technique we use only 0.5 mm of a very fine needle injected under the skin (smaller than the tip of a pen). You may feel a small pinch on the more sensitive sites, but it generally causes no pain. If you are concerned, we can apply a topical anesthetic, but we’d suggest that you try without before making that decision. You’ll be surprised at how far Botox® has come… it’s not your mom’s Botox® treatment.

Q: Are there any side effects from therapeutic Botox® treatments?

There are no side effects when we use the Weal Injection Technique. You may have heard of, or be concerned about bruising, soreness to the injection sites, headaches, etc… but compared to the standard techniques, there are really very few incidents of reported side effects. Most importantly, because it is very precise, there is much lower chance of Botox® traveling into the muscles to cause undesired effects, such as canted smiles, dropped or curved eyebrows.

Q: What is the cost associated with therapeutic Botox®?

Botox® is typically charged per unit. Ranging from $8 to $10 per unit if it’s injected by a nurse RN and up to $12 unit if injected by a dental surgeon, plastic surgeon and or a dermatologist. As an introductory cost for our Kingston East clients, we will be charging only $8 dollars per unit, which will be injected by a highly trained dental surgeon for optimal therapeutic effect.

The average cost of EMG therapy is $300.00, but as a professional courtesy we are offering it as a gift to you at no extra charge (for a limited time only).

Q: Is therapeutic Botox® covered by my insurance?

Some dental benefits cover therapeutic Botox® but we’d suggest contacting your insurance provider before your first session as there are many determining factors, including:

  • If you were previously diagnosed with chronic migraines by a medical doctor (family doctor, neurologist), your drug plan may cover up to half the cost of the medication.
  • If you have been involved in bad fall or a motor vehicle accident and suffered a blow to your jaw leading to pain in the head and neck area, your may be more likely to receive coverage.
If you need any help submitting the pre-determination request, we’d be happy to support you and provide any paperwork you need. You never want to be surprised when it comes to your dental coverage.

Q: What sets us apart?

Not all clinics are the same and not all take the care that we take to ensure clients have a positive experience and achieve a successful outcome. We take the time to understand what it is you are trying to achieve and provide the plan that makes sense for you. What makes us different? Here are some of the things that set us apart from others in this field:

  • We take 28 images of your face , neck and shoulder to document and diagnose muscular problems. This series of photos are taken at every recall appointment and allows the clinician to tailor the therapy for your individual needs.
  • As dental surgeons we are very familiar with the complex anatomy of the head and neck. We gently palpate the bone, origin and insertion of muscles and precisely mark our therapeutic injection sites. By marking the injection sites, we take a more targeted approach with absolutely no undesired effects.
  • A photo series of the marked sites are taken and reviewed in your follow-up to determine how to best adjust your treatment.
  • We conduct an EMG analysis of the muscle, head, and neck in each appointment. It allows for a targeted diagnosis and customized approach for each affected muscle.
  • We exclusively utilize the Weal Injection technique, which requires a highly trained clinician to administer. The Weal Injection technique has shown to have almost no negative side effects - no pain, no bruising, no eyebrow drop, no Vulcan eye brow.

Q: Why should I consider Therapeutic Botox®?

Botox® is a popular treatment for those suffering from jaw tension, TMJ disorder and constant headaches. Therapeutic Botox® allows for a targeted long-lasting therapy for pain involving the head and neck area without the need for daily therapy and typically without the need for oral medication. If you are still uncertain as to whether therapeutic Botox® is for you, please consider consulting with one of our specialists and they can answer all of your questions.
