Why Dental X-Rays Are So Important
January 15, 2023 / DENTISTRY

You already know about the importance of regular dental visits. Since most major dental problems are preventable, regular dental check-ups (recommended twice per year) are an easy way to ensure that small problems that can be easily treated are not left to turn into more serious issues that require treatments that are invasive, uncomfortable, and often expensive.
Part of these regular dental examinations are x-rays. Dental x-rays are an important element of oral health because they give your family dentist in Kingston a close-up view of what’s happening beneath the gum line, to give them a better chance of identifying small problems before they become big problems.
What is a dental x-ray?
A dental x-ray is an image taken by your dentist and oral care team that captures images of the inside of the mouth, the teeth, and gums. These images bypass the cheeks, gums and other tissues that usually block the dentist’s view of the teeth, nerves and roots.
Why are dental x-rays important?
Because many common dental problems begin below the gumline, dental x-rays allow your dentist to catch problems when they first begin to develop.
Dental x-rays also allow the dentist to get a closer view of the teeth and root structure, and to see any cracks, chips, or cavities that are forming in the teeth.
How often are dental x-rays recommended?
While your family dentist may make different recommendations based on your health and history of dental interventions and procedures, most dentists recommend that healthy patients without a complicated dental history have x-rays taken about once-a-year.
Are dental x-rays safe?
Yes. Dental x-rays are an extremely common procedure requiring very low levels of radiation. Dental technologies have significantly improved over the past decade, and the level of radiation produced by dental x-rays has declined to a negligible level.
If you are still concerned about radiation, just let us know. We can explain the low level of risk and provide you with lead coverings that will protect you from even the smallest amount of radiation.
If you’re having dental pain and are concerned you might have a cavity, or you’re overdue for a dental x-ray, call our team at Greenwood Park Dentistry to schedule an appointment today. We’ll assess the current condition of your oral health and set you up for a lifetime of healthy, happy smiles.
